Shea Network Ghana (SNG) has taken a significant step toward empowering women in the shea value chain by organizing a Cooperative Formation Meeting with women groups in Dugshegu, a community in the Sagnerigu Municipality of the Northern Region.
The meeting, held in May, marked the beginning of the process to formalize these women groups into a registered cooperative. This initiative is part of Shea Network Ghana’s broader goal of strengthening the organizational capacity of women engaged in shea picking and processing, and integrating them more meaningfully into the national shea ecosystem.
The move was led by the Coordinator of Shea Network Ghana, Mr. James Kpenyog Dakora, with support from the Gender and Cooperative Development Officer, Mr. Issah Fuseini. The two led discussions on the importance of cooperative structures, shared insights on legal and operational processes, and engaged directly with the women to address their concerns and aspirations.
According to officials from SNG, the Cooperative Formation Meeting aimed to introduce the women to the concept of cooperatives, explain the legal and operational framework involved, and initiate the steps required to register them formally.
Once formalized, the cooperative will be eligible to become a member of Shea Network Ghana, giving them access to capacity-building programs, market linkages, advocacy platforms, and other essential resources.
“The formation of a cooperative will not only give these women legal recognition but also help strengthen their collective voice, improve their bargaining power, and enhance access to funding and training opportunities,” said Mr. Dakora during the meeting.
Participants expressed excitement and optimism about the opportunity. Many noted that joining a cooperative under the umbrella of Shea Network Ghana would help them improve their production methods, access better markets, and ultimately enhance their livelihoods.
Shea Network Ghana continues to play a leading role in organizing and supporting women in the shea industry across Ghana, promoting inclusive growth and sustainable development within the sector.
