As part of its commitment to the implementation of the Ghana Shea Landscape Emission Reductions Project (GSLERP), Shea Network Ghana (SNG) has successfully conducted a Shea seed potting exercise at its nursery site in Achubunyor The activity, which took place in May 2025, was led by the organization’s GSLERP Project Officer Mr. Ibrahim Iddrisu and supported by community members, particularly women beneficiaries.
The potting exercise involved the seeding of thousands of Shea seeds in nursery bags, marking a significant step toward the annual raising of Shea seedlings—a core activity under the project’s landscape restoration strategy. This exercise is part of SNG’s efforts to contribute to environmental sustainability and climate resilience in the shea-growing zones of Northern Ghana.
The GSLERP project is a five-year initiative funded under the Green Climate Fund and sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is being implemented with technical support from the Global Shea Alliance (GSA) and the Forestry Commission of Ghana. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, while improving livelihoods and enhancing ecosystem services in the northern savannah ecological zone.
By mobilizing community support, especially among women, SNG is ensuring that the benefits of the project are both gender-responsive and sustainable. The potting activity not only contributes to ecological restoration but also offers skill-building and economic opportunities for local women, who play a central role in the shea value chain.
The potting of Shea seeds at the Achobunyo nursery reaffirms SNG’s active role in advancing GSLERP’s mission and in promoting inclusive environmental stewardship in Ghana’s shea landscape.
